Micalys Automated Whole Slide Scanner

From Idea to Impact: One Year of Micalys

A year of purpose. A product shaped by need, refined by use, and driven by trust.

One year ago, we launched more than just a product.
We launched a belief: that access to expertise should be universal, not urban. That digital pathology shouldn’t be confined to high-end hospitals or glass towers. That the right tool, in the right hands, could transform diagnostics even in the most underserved corners of the country.

That belief took shape as Micalys.

It didn’t begin with a perfect plan. It began with questions.

“Why do so many laboratories still rely on manual microscopy?”
“Why is remote reporting by experts not yet the norm?”
“And what if the entire diagnostic workflow scanning, sharing, and reporting could be integrated into a single, seamless platform?”

These questions brought together cross-functional teams spanning design, engineering, sales, and strategy. In the months that followed, Micalys was developed, rigorously tested, and refined to meet real world diagnostic needs.

It wasn’t built only through planning and meetings. It was shaped by challenges, driven by purpose, and made possible by a shared commitment to innovation. Products often start on paper. But those that endure are driven by purpose and built with a commitment to go beyond “good enough.”

Here are the voices behind those pivotal moments, the people who brought Micalys to life.

SAMRAT – THE RELENTLESS VISION BEHIND MICALYS

For Samrat, CEO and Co-Founder of MedPrime, Micalys isn’t just a diagnostic device it’s a mission that’s constantly evolving, always on his mind, and never far from his desk. From design brainstorms and field deployments to patent filings and branding decisions, there’s no aspect of Micalys he hasn’t touched.

“From the beginning, I wasn’t interested in just building a scanner. I wanted to give pathologists something they hadn’t received in years a system designed for them, not around them.”

Like most meaningful innovations, Micalys began with a gap.
Samrat witnessed firsthand the limitations of conventional microscopy and the fragmented nature of existing digital tools. The solutions available were often too expensive, overly complex, or simply not suited to the realities of diagnostic labs in India.

“We kept asking: What do pathologists need to feel confident, connected, and empowered wherever they are? And then we built for that.”

From developing the core technology in house to registering patents, Samrat has been at the helm of every major decision. He’s led demo walkthroughs, reviewed UI flows, tracked market expansion, and even weighed in on the look and feel of the Micalys logo. Whether it’s a 7 a.m. call with a hospital or a midnight feedback session with a customer, he remains immersed in the product’s journe

We don’t cut corners. That’s non-negotiable. Whether it’s optical clarity, turnaround time, or after sales support if it carries MedPrime’s name, it carries our highest standard.

For Samrat, innovation in digital diagnostics didn’t begin with Micalys it started in 2014, with MedPrime’s first product, Cilika. Micalys emerged from that foundation and has evolved through years of learning, iteration, and commitment.

From initial concept to prototype reviews, AI model validations to UX refinements he has steered Micalys not just as a CEO, but as its first and most relentless believer.

“The future of diagnostics isn’t centralized. It’s distributed, intelligent, and deeply human. Micalys is our way of building that future one slide, one lab, one life at a time.”

And in his signature, quietly confident tone, he signs off with “Micalys delivers. MedPrime stands by it.”

AMOL – DESIGNING FOR THE REAL WORLD

When the team first began exploring the idea of Micalys, the starting point was simple: could Cilika evolve into something more powerful?

Amol Tawde, Master Trainer at MedPrime and the person behind every physical iteration of Micalys, recalls those early conversations vividly.

“Initially, the idea was just to upgrade Cilika. But as we dug deeper into what pathologists truly needed whole slide imaging, remote control, high throughput capability we realized Micalys had to be a different beast altogether.”

Cilika had opened the door, but Micalys demanded a complete redesign: something robust, scalable, and ready for realworld deployment.

Micalys had to be durable enough to transport, fast enough to perform, and intuitive enough for anyone to use without needing a degree in rocket science

Designed for flexibility and longevity, Micalys wasn’t built to be final it was built to evolve.

“The field of digital pathology is moving fast. Micalys was designed to grow with it,” Amol emphasized.
“It’s not finished it’s future ready.”

From hand drawn sketches to full scale field trials, Amol ensured that every screw, surface, and slot in Micalys served a purpose and had room for what’s next.

DIPENDRA – FROM FIELD INSIGHT TO FIRST IMPACT

Long before Micalys had a name, it was a growing need observed in the field during Cilika deployments.

Dipendra Singh Bhadauriya, National Sales Manager at MedPrime and a key driver of Cilika’s commercial success, remembers the shift clearly.

“While working on Cilika, we saw its limitations not in what it could do, but in how far it could go,” he said.

“Pathologists were asking for whole slide imaging, automation, and remote accessibility. The existing market didn’t meet those expectations especially in the real world conditions of Indian labs.”

That ground-level insight laid the foundation for Micalys. After a few attempted upgrades to Cilika, the team realized retrofitting wouldn’t be enough. A new platform had to be built one that could manage end-to-end digital workflows, from scanning and sharing to AI-powered diagnosis.

“Every milestone in building Micalys was a learning curve,” Dipendra said.
“We weren’t just engineering a device we were decoding what modern pathology truly needed, one iteration at a time.”

He recalls one of Micalys’ earliest field trials with clarity:

“It wasn’t even a commercially ready unit. But we took it to a lab that urgently needed TB reporting and the results were so impactful, it gave us instant conviction to keep building.”

And the impact wasn’t limited to performance it translated into real-world value.

Dipendra, NSM of medprime

In government hospitals, acceptance doesn’t come easy. You need results, clinical validation, and trust. At AIIMS Deoghar, a pathologist used Micalys at a primary health center and saw measurable improvements. That deployment didn’t just help patients it helped the doctor secure a grant to expand the project.

“Since then,” Dipendra adds, “Micalys has only gone onwards and upwards.”

BINIL – INTELLIGENCE IN EVERY FRAME

From day one, Binil Jacob Co-Founder and CTO at MedPrime knew that Micalys had to be more than just a device. It had to be intelligent, adaptable, and built with a deep understanding of diagnostic workflows.

One of the most memorable moments was when our first prototype came to life. It had only the most basic functionality just enough to load and navigate a digital slide. But it was built on a rock-solid foundation, and that foundation carried us forward. Today, Micalys enables scalable workflows, integrates AI insight, and powers modern pathology bringing to life everything we once imagined, and more.

What followed was a rare convergence: software engineers, pathologists, designers, and data scientists people from very different disciplines coming together with a shared purpose.

“Watching them challenge assumptions and co-create solutions was deeply inspiring,” Binil says.

There were hurdles too, ones that tested both the system and the team.

“During an early deployment, we discovered a subtle flaw in how we accessed and cached slide tiles. It seemed minor but started   ballooning our cloud costs,” he explains.
“That moment could’ve derailed us. But the team didn’t flinch they adapted. That kind of resilience still defines how we work.”

Through every iteration, one principle guided the journey: clinical trust isn’t built overnight.

“You earn it one smart improvement at a time.”

PATHOLOGISTS – PARTNERS IN PROGRESS

Micalys wasn’t built for pathologists alone it was built with them.

Their feedback sharpened our imaging.
Their real world usage shaped our reporting tools.
Their input through CME panels, pilot deployments, and rigorous lab trials helped make the case for national adoption.

“Pathologists aren’t just end users they’re enablers,” the team often says.

“Micalys expands their reach; it doesn’t replace it.”

By offering real time remote access and intelligent diagnostic support, Micalys empowers pathologists to lead in a new era of connected, data-driven diagnostics.

Their role is no longer confined to interpretation they’re at the forefront of scaling expertise where it’s needed most.

Through every update and upgrade, they’ve remained our most critical voice benchmarking accuracy, refining workflows, and helping us build a solution worthy of their trust.
